Seville St. Augustine grass is a popular choice for lawns in warm climates, particularly in Florida, due to its ability to thrive in warm, humid conditions. Seville features a soft, fine-bladed texture and a rich, dark-green hue, creating a lush, luxurious appearance that many homeowners find appealing.

Seville establishes quickly from sod or plugs, thanks to its shallow root structure. It is recognized for its excellent shade tolerance, making it an ideal option for lawns with partial shade or areas under trees where other grasses may struggle. It can tolerate as little as 3-4 hours of sunlight per day. Seville can tolerate salt spray makes it a suitable choice for homes in coastal areas.

It's not ideal for high-traffic areas like sports fields or play areas. Although drought tolerant, Seville still needs regular irrigation, especially during dry periods, to maintain its health and appearance.

As a warm-season grass, Seville may turn brown and go dormant in colder climates or during prolonged periods of freezing temperatures.

Planting Plugs. Remove any existing sod/weeds from the area. For Seville St. Augustine grass, a spacing of 6-12 inches apart is recommended, with closer spacing resulting in quicker coverage.

A trowel can be used to create a hole slightly bigger than the sod plug, making sure the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil surface.

Use soil to fill in any gaps around the plug and water thoroughly to settle the soil and ensure good root-to-soil contact.

Keep the soil consistently moist for the first 10-20 days, watering deeply 2-4 times a day if needed. Avoid overwatering, especially in shady areas.

Wait until the grass plugs have established and grown to at least 3-4 inches in height before the first mow, which usually takes 3-4 weeks. Once the grass is established, mow at the highest setting initially to avoid pulling up the plugs.

Apply a pre-emergent herbicide in spring and fall to prevent weed seeds from germinating. Hand pull or use targeted herbicides following label instructions carefully when any weeds do emerge before it’s filled in.
