The Ceylon Cinnamon Tree, also known as “true cinnamon,” is a prized tropical evergreen native to Sri Lanka and southern India. Valued both for its ornamental appeal and culinary significance, this aromatic tree features glossy green leaves and reddish new growth that adds vibrant contrast. As it matures, the tree develops smooth brown bark and a subtle, sweet fragrance that intensifies in warm, humid conditions. When carefully pruned, the plant remains compact and manageable, making it an excellent addition to home gardens, greenhouses, or container patios. In the right conditions, this cinnamon tree can produce fragrant white or pale yellow flowers, followed by small dark berries. Its inner bark can eventually be harvested for culinary use, though many choose to grow it purely for its aesthetic and sensory appeal. Thriving in frost-free climates, Ceylon Cinnamon Trees appreciate a warm, humid environment and can be grown indoors near sunny windows or outdoors in zones 9–11. With proper care, this unique tree rewards growers with lush foliage, a tropical flair, and the satisfaction of growing one of the world’s most cherished spice plants.

  • Physical Characteristics: A slow-growing evergreen, the Ceylon Cinnamon Tree features smooth bark, glossy oval leaves, and reddish new growth. Mature plants can reach 8–10 feet in containers or taller in the ground in tropical zones.
  • Light Requirements: Ceylon Cinnamon Trees thrive in full sun to partial shade. When grown outdoors, provide at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Indoors, place near a bright window with filtered light to support healthy foliage and optimal growth.
  • Watering Needs: Maintain consistent soil moisture without letting the plant sit in water. Water deeply when the top inch of soil feels dry, and adjust frequency based on season and humidity. During active growing months, the tree may require more frequent watering.
  • Soil Preferences: This tropical tree prefers well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil. A sandy loam or potting mix with good aeration promotes healthy root development and prevents standing water, especially in container settings.
  • Temperature and Humidity: Ceylon Cinnamon grows best in warm, humid conditions. It prefers temperatures above 65°F and does not tolerate frost. In cooler climates, grow it indoors or move containers inside during colder months to avoid damage.
